Major achievements in 2013-14
Simplex has capitalised on its lineage, domain expertise and technological competence to build a strong, diversified business model. ¨This was part of our overall strategy of risk mitigation, ensuring that we are not overly dependent on any one vertical for our revenues and, at the same time, able to factor in the vagaries of the business,¨ says Amitabh Mundhra, Vice Chairman, Simplex Infrastructures Ltd. ¨We consciously focused on quality of order book, rather than quantity. We also had a single-minded focus on optimising operational efficiency while rationalising cost and maintaining healthy cash flows. To ensure better employee engagement, we put in place an innovative training and skill development programme wherein we constantly monitor and motivate employees.¨
During the turbulent phase last year, Simplex did not fall into the trap of over-competitiveness and instead looked at bidding for projects sensibly and ensuring adherence to the time schedule. ¨We focused on maintaining a healthy order book and did not hesitate to walk away from big-ticket projects where we did not see adequate margins,¨ shares Mundhra. ¨Even where client payments were delayed, we had an open dialogue with them and rationalised their project timelines as per cash flows.¨
Simplex´s focus has been on stable, well-financed projects with adequate margins that will get realised in time. ¨We do not believe in going after showcase projects that may look good on paper, but not good on the books,¨ says Mundhra. ¨Some ace projects we completed in the last financial year include the Eastern Freeway in Mumbai and the work done on the Mumbai Metro.¨
In Mundhra´s view, the advent of the new Government has heralded newfound optimism in the sector and things are beginning to look up. ¨We have built up our pre qualification strengths in three to four key areas and plan to explore and capitalise on those opportunities,¨ he adds. Recommendations to the Government Mundhra believes the Government should focus on removing hurdles in land, policy and finance, which would help get projects off the ground. ¨I believe there is a good project pipeline that has been built and removal of pending bottlenecks will create a huge positive impact for the sector,¨ he concludes.
¨We do not believe in going after showcase projects that may look good on paper, but not good on the books.¨
