Data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation reveal that delays and other similar reasons have resulted in 322 infrastructure projects, each worth Rs 150 crore or more, observing a cost overrun of Rs 1.71 lakh crore as of March 2017.
The original cost of the 1,231 projects was around Rs 15,59,571 crore, but as per the data released, the expected cost of completion will be nearly Rs 1,731,162.47 crore. The amount spent on these projects as of March 2017 is Rs 746,480.94, reflecting 43 per cent of the expected cost.
Of the total projects, 322 have overrun costs and 327 were behind schedule. And, 105 projects are both behind schedule and show overrun costs with regard to the original implementation plan. With respect to the delayed projects, 78 projects show a delay of more than 61 months, 119 projects show a delay of between 25-60 months, 67 projects show a delay of around 13-24 months and 63 projects are seeing a delay of up to a year.
