Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) decided to install platform screen doors at six crowded underground stations on the Metro's Yellow Line (HUDA City Centre to Jahangirpuri) and has awarded tenders for the contract.
The six stations - Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, Chawri Bazaar, Chandni Chowk and Kashmere Gate stations - are usually very crowded and the proposed screen doors are intended to prevent accidents.
People in the underground stations are more vulnerable owing to the enclosed spaces. The tender came out last year; work on the project will start soon, the official added.
DMRC also plans to install these screen doors on the Blue Line later, reports suggest. The Yellow Line carries more than eight lakh passengers daily while the Blue Line also crossed this mark recently.
Further, the corporation would install such doors at all stations on new lines in Phase-III of the Metro network (Mukundpur to Shiv Vihar, and Janakpuri-west to Botanical Garden). In Singapore, all metro stations have screen doors. The Delhi Airport Metro Express also has these doors at every station.
