This year the construction sector is all smiles as two of the Padma Bhushan awardees are among the most reckoned - eminent architect Hafeez Contractor and famous industrialist and Owner of Shapoorji Pallonji Group (SP Group), Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry.
Full of surprising and revolutionary ideas and referred to as ¨the slumdog millionaire architect¨, Hafeez Contractor has had the ability to read new regulations and immediately find exploitable loopholes and work behind the scenes to shape legislation that serves his business. His uncanny ability to change his architectural style from one commission to next is a significant reason why his work is sought after by so many. Contractor has also served as a Non-Independent Director of Orbit Corporation and a Director of Airports Authority of India. He is also a member of the Bombay Heritage Committee and New Delhi Lutyens Bungalow Zone Review Committee. Also, the news of Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry being chosen for Padma Bhushan, did not come as a surprise for those who know him. An Irish citizen, also known as the ¨Phantom of Bombay House¨ with a mixture of awe and curiosity for keeping low profile, Mistry started working at the age of 18. Nothing stopped him to go on to undertake big construction projects first in Mumbai and then in the Middle East. Under this construction magnate, SP Group has built some of India´s most iconic buildings. What´s more, Mistry is said to be the world´s most reclusive billionaire. One of India´s most successful and powerful businessmen, he has an eye for detail and is a perfectionist to the core. Under his leadership, SP Group has evolved and grown exponentially to become a huge conglomerate with multiple business segments.
Both, Contractor and Mistry, have set a high epitome of success for the country. CW salutes and applauds these stalwarts for this renowned award and wishes them many more marvels in times to come.
