The soon-to-be-unveiled terminal 2 (T2) at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) looks like a crown that has adorned the city of Mumbai! The most awaited inauguration of this state-of-the-art terminal will be on January 10, 2014. CSIA is one of India's busiest airports with three domestic terminals at Santa Cruz and two international terminals at Sahar in operation. In February 2006, Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), a JV between the GVK led consortium and Airports Authority of India was awarded the mandate of modernising and upgrading Mumbai's CSIA. MIAL has kept its word as it gets ready to unveil and offer Mumbai one of its most prized possessions - the T2 project - at Mumbai airport in just two days from now. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) and inspired by the white peacock, the new T2 is a state-of-the-art four level integrated terminal with an enormous area of over 439,000 sq m. In fact, Mumbai's T2 is larger than Changi's T3 and Heathrow's T5. The area of granite utilised in the project is about 185,000 sq m that is enough to cover 27 footballs fields! The total area of skylight glass is over 30,000 sq m that is enough to cover Wimbledon's Centre Court by six times! For lighting purpose, approximately four kilometres of LED lighting have been used to illuminate the façade of this mega project. Blue Star Ltd has won orders worth Rs 130 crore for air conditioning and plumbing of this project. The new terminal (T2) offers a blend of innovation, technology and style! It will include new taxiways and apron areas for aircraft parking. Considered to be one of the most iconic developments in recent times, T2 will set new international standards, across every aspect such as architecture, planning, technology, functionality and service.
