The Central Pollution Control Board has proposed that hazardous, municipal and agricultural waste be recycled as fuel in cement plants to minimise pollution. The guidelines are in line with the hazardous waste rules 2016, which makes a case for prevention, reuse, recycling, recovery, utilisation, before considering the option of disposal through incineration or landfilling. As per official estimates, about 7.4 MT of hazardous waste is generated annually in India, of which nearly 4 MT is recyclable.
