Home to 80 well-appointed rooms and suites and India's largest ballroom, the hotel is set to be the new symbol of luxury in Delhi. SHUBHANGI BIDWE finds out more.
Hearty hospitality has always been one of the most valued traditions in Delhi. Indeed, in this city, a guest is considered a representative of God. Kempinski, Europe's oldest hotel group, seeks to channel this rich tradition with its newest landmark: Kempinski Ambience Hotel, Delhi.
Spread across 20,000 sq m, the hotel comprises two towers of 12 storeys each. Encased within these two towers are 480 well-appointed rooms and suites, dual swimming pools, extensive banqueting and world-class dining options, including India's largest ballroom accommodating over 6,000 delegates. Construction on this project began in 2008 and the hotel is expected to swing into action by January 2013.
The idea takes root
Every great development has its roots in an idea reflecting the historical, social and economic background of the city it is situated in. Buoyant in nature, Delhiities are well-known for their fun-loving nature. The vision was to provide them with maximum number of restaurants, bars and facilities, explains Achal Kataria, architect of the project. "It was also to create an iconic building that would stand out and change the entire real-estate scenario of East Delhi. For this, the client directed us to design a building with a specific number of rooms and the largest banqueting facility in the city. Besides us, HBA Architects and Singapore-based Buregga Farnel were also involved in the project. The entire co-ordination for design approvals between us and the client was executed by the consultant."
Design and materials
"The basic design for this hotel spanning about 1 million sq ft including a basement involved straight, horizontal and vertical lines in shades of grey and white with free-flowing spaces," says Kataria.
Clearly, a project of such huge volume required high-quality materials. "We imported these materials from all over the world," reveals Kataria. "The base mate-rial used in the building is RCC further supported by brick and steel. A finishing touch has been lent by glass imported from China and stone from Gwalior, Rajasthan, Italy and Turkey. With aluminium glass and mint-white Gwalior stone cladding, the beauty of the building is further enhanced through the use of Italian marble in the outer portions. Ease of availability helped determine the selection of these materials. Also, the attractiveness of Gwalior stone and the lightness and warmth it lends to a structure impelled us to zero in on the material."
Keeping it cool
"A fully air-conditioned structure, the Kempinski Ambience Hotel has installed drillers and AHUs from Voltas at various locations," Kataria tells us."The building is adequately lit by a lighting system that uplifts not only the fatade, but the entire landscaped area lending a feeling of warmth to the building. He adds,"Italian marble and wood veneers used in the interiors reflect the festive spirit of Indian culture and are apt for functions and weddings. The exquisiteness of the walls, painted in elegant and calm colours, is accentuated by selected artworks from contemporary Indian artists. The structure is elegantly furnished with curtains and furniture from Kerala."
A comfy zone
The hotel has 24-hour backup for water and electricity. "This enhances the comfort levels of residents, which is further accentuated by 100 per cent electrical and plumbing solutions provided by Spectral," observes Kataria. "This ranges from hot water generation to hot water supply to all rooms." Rainwater harvesting facilities along with recharge and reuse for wastewater and air-conditioning make this building an eco-friendly development. The low-E glass acts as a barricade blocking harmful sun rays and protecting the air-conditioning in the building. With the building confirming to NV norms for fire safety, the building assures all visitors a safe environment. Fire sprinkler and fire detection systems are installed at strategic places and all exits and entrances are properly indicated through signage. Additionally, the building employs BMS software and cameras to detect any infringement to its safety.
Safe, secure and sophisticated, Kempinski Ambience Hotel is evidently geared up to be¡come a new capital landmark in the city.
