Odisha has set a target of completing the first phase of construction work for Gopalpur Port by June 2019, as per a release by the state government. The decision was reportedly taken after a review meeting by Chief Secretary AP Padhi. Gopalpur Port is seeking to strengthen existing berths and construct two new ones by March 2019. A target has also been set in the meeting to complement the dredging up to 15 m by June 2019.
Gopalpur Port commenced operations on March 29, 2013, but was closed down as a result of the damage caused by the cyclone ‘Phailin’. The port has started operations post repair from December 2015 and has handled cargo volume of around 2 million tonne.
