The Andhra Pradesh Government laid the foundation stone for the new terminal building at the city airport, to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 135 crore. The airport needs 700 acre for expansion, which will have a modern runway to facilitate all kinds of aircraft. The airport will also have a facility for cargo service. It currently has the capacity to handle 35,000 passengers per month (about 4 lakh per annum), while the new interim terminal building will handle 1 million passengers. The construction work is expected to be completed in 15 months.
