Presently, out of 238 cement factories across India, only 46 plants have explored the idea of utilising plastic debris for fuelling purposes. The Union Affairs Ministry is likely to step in and increase the rate of usage from the current 10 per cent to 25 per cent. As per official estimates, around 26,000 tonne of plastic waste is generated across the country on a daily basis and only 60 per cent of it is recyclable. Cement kilns can use up single-use plastics without any harm to the environment and it will resolve the issue of non-recyclable plastic waste by getting rid of garbage that cannot be processed. The association of cement manufacturers have assured their support for the initiative.
