Our New 3rd Plant is Equiped With The Latest Technologies

- R Vasudevan, Group Managing Director, GMP Technical Solutions

Pertaining to the growing demand and safety concerns for building evacuation during fire in high-rise residential and commercial properties, and the entire infrastructure segment, GMP Technical Solutions recently began operations of its second manufacturing unit near Mumbai. The company, in its continuing expansion strategy, started its new manufacturing unit (Unit-III) in Bhiwandi on July 13, 2016, which was inaugurated by R Vasudevan, Group Managing Director, GMP Technical Solutions.

CW spoke to Ajay Mehta, Director, GMP Technical Solutions, to know more about the strategy behind opening 3rd unit near Mumbai while it already has two manufacturing units in North India in Baddi, Himachal.

What made the company establish a new unit?
The construction industry is evidently on a sharp growth path in India. Over the past few years, GMP has grown to a leadership position in metal doors and frames, clean room partitions and the clean room equipment industry. Considering the robust industry growth expected in the next 10-15 years, there was an immediate need to increase the manufacturing capacity of our products to meet the growing demand. We expanded our existing manufacturing unit in Baddi in November 2015, and this new manufacturing unit - Unit-III in Bhiwandi - is our second level of expansion. The decision to select Mumbai as a location was purely strategic. We believe it will give us an edge for various markets in the country such as in the south, west, and in exporting to other countries as well.

What is the manufacturing capacity of the new unit?
We have designed the plant for a manufacturing capacity of 45,000 doors and 3 million sq ft of panels per annum.

This has led to an approximate 30 per cent increase in our existing manufacturing capacity from our previous two units in Baddi.

What are the advantages in terms of location?
The unit´s location was decided keeping in mind some important markets. We will serve the markets of the south, west and exports from this unit. This will result in better time commitments and savings in terms of freight, transportation time, etc. Also, we are the only manufacturer with a hi-tech unit for metal doors and frames and clean room partitions near Mumbai; this will benefit our business.

Any technological advancement in the new unit as compared to the other two units of GMP?
Yes. This plant is equipped with latest technologies available in the sheet metal industry. The major machines are procured from renowned suppliers of the world. It is the only manufacturing plant to have a laser cutting machine procured from Trumph (Germany), and a Turret punching machine from Amada (Japan). Both these machines have an accuracy level of 0.1 mm. The powder coating plant is procured from Gema (Switzerland), the decoiling and roll forming machines from Bulldog (UK) and has an automatic bar coding system for all the manufactured products.

What are your expectations in terms of exports from the new unit?
We plan to manufacture all export orders from Unit-III, which will save time and domestic freight costs too. But, if there is a capacity concern at a particular stage, the option of Unit-I and Unit-II are always open. We will work on the optimisation of capacity for all three units.

What are your future prospects for the metal doors and clean room panels market?
Our expectations from the domestic markets are high.

It will definitely walk the growth path for the next ten years. Having said that, better government policies and an industrial environment are necessary to boost this growth. With regards to the market for exports, the market has become volatile and unpredictable due to issues such as currency crises, BREXIT, oil prices, civil wars, etc. But, we hope for good growth in the export markets too in the years to come.

What are the company´s future plans?
We will discuss this after we take necessary decisions. Currently, we are excited about this new unit, and will make all the possible efforts to make it successful.
