Our strategy is to keep pace with India's growth

Piush Goyal, Managing Director, Kelley Material Handling Equipment India

The positive movement in FDI, coupled with the growing trend in palletisation and increasing customer expectations, create greater amount of opportunity for players in the material handling industry . Within three years of operations, since its inception in India, Kelly Material Handling Equipment India is already established as a premium brand for its innovative, reliable and energy saving product range. It is a 100 per cent wholly-owned subsidiary of 4Front Engineered Solutions, Dallas, Texas, USA. "Kelley's strategy is to keep the pace with India's growth and strengthen its position as market leader in its range of products," says Piush Goyal, Managing Director, Kelley Material Handling Equipment India. Excerpts from the interview:

Where do you think the industry is headed?
The Indian government's challenge is to smartly assess methods to generate and spend US$ 1 trillion during this five-year plan. Our industry is the derivative of the infrastructure development, which is the key motto of every government. The positive movement in FDI, growing trend in palletisation across sectors and dedicated freight corridors are fuelling opportunities for technologically advanced material handling systems.

To what extent has the slowdown impacted your Indian operations?
We invented the world's first dock leveller in 1953 in the USA. Also, our innovative loading dock solutions and HVLS fans mitigate many of the warehousing challenges. Around 600 units of our equipment are already being used in Indian market. When we formally entered the Indian market, the slowdown had already begun but we were very sure of our product and pricing strategy. Our major customers include Indian companies and the MNCs using our equipment in their overseas operations. Hence while there is pressure on the bottom line, the greater need for us is to educate our other potential customers about the benefits of using the latest technology in this field.

Which products from your entire range have you introduced in the Indian market? What are the current segments of the market that you are catering to?
Our range of products primarily caters to the variety of sectors, viz, manufacturing, warehousing, retail and logistic companies. We have seven world-class manufacturing facilities in USA, Canada and South America. Our Indian team is presently working on our next facility here, which will cater to this part of the world.

We offer a wide range of loading dock equipment and warehouse products to companies worldwide. Our broadest line of pit style and specialty dock levellers as well as dock seals and shelters fit all size door openings and applications. We strive to manufacture dock equipment that makes the workplace safer, more productive and more energy-efficient.

Kelley® Fusion® HVLS Fans (high-volume, low-speed fans) enjoy the dominating position worldwide and are getting more popular in India also. These are available in 8'-24' diameter range fitted with up to 2.0 HP motor. A single HVLS fan can cover a facility from 4,000 sq ft - 20,000 sq ft. They help in improving warehouse and factory environment, worker safety and comfort. They also save a huge amount of money, resulting in quick return on investment.

What are your plans for distribution and customer support network?
A customer-focused organisation, we have established three offices and a central warehouse in India with a technical team trained at our US headquarters.

Who are your major customers in India?
We supply warehouse products and dock equipment to the largest warehousing and manufacturing companies across the world. Our list of customers in India includes: Tetrapak, Semco, Indo Space Rohan (Pune), Wal-Mart (Punjab, Haryana and Karnataka), AO Smith (Bengaluru), Sumitomo-Mitsui (Haryana), etc.
