Shining towards an accident-free future, Volvo´s ´driver training´ programme focuses on various safety issues concerned with driving.

Volvo Truck is synonymous with safety - a core value of the Volvo Group, which is embedded right from the vehicle design. The safest cab, superior driveability and visibility, effective driver training, advanced braking systems and driver support systems all contribute to safer truck transport. The Driver Training programme pioneered by Volvo in India has trained over 55,000 drivers in good driving practices, making the roads safer for passengers, pedestrians and other road users.

Every year, about 1.2 million people die in road accidents around the world. Heavy vehicles are involved in relatively few accidents considering the number of such vehicles on the roads and the large amount of transportation they carry out. But when a truck accident occurs, the consequences are often serious.

Ensuring safety
Volvo has a holistic approach to traffic safety that takes all road users into consideration. To help lead the way, Volvo Trucks established its own accident research team back in 1969. Over the years, their experts have examined more than 1,600 accidents, resulting in a comprehensive database unmatched in the industry. All their knowledge is used in the development of new solutions, such as front underrun protection, an industry first that the company introduced in 1996.

Volvo continues to be a leader in traffic safety within the truck industry, working actively in the areas of safety throughout the organisation as well as with other players to reduce the risk of accidents and create the preconditions for safe transportation - striving towards an accident-free future.

Driver safety
Accidents happen due to human error; hence an alert, relaxed and attentive driver is more likely to avoid an accident from happening. Driver fatigue is by far the most common cause of single-vehicle accidents involving trucks. ¨Even the most skilled drivers can face situations that are difficult to handle without assistance. The company´s goal is to provide them with the safest and most productive working environment on the road. This is why it has focused on developing driver support systems that promote full concentration and alertness, and that help avoid accidents in emergency situations,¨ said Rama Rao AS, Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing & Aftermarket, Volvo Trucks, VECV.

He further added, ¨Visibility is also a vital factor, which is why the company is always looking for ways to improve and expand the view from behind the wheel. Simply put, the goal is to eliminate the blind spots.¨

Minimising risk
When it comes to truck transport, truck at a standstill, is the worst situation, especially if it is in the workshop for repairs due to an accident. Simply put, it pays to minimise the risk for accidents.

All accidents irrespective of major or minor will impact the bottom-line. In addition to the risk for injuries or worse, the financial consequences of an accident like the costs in terms of truck downtime, repairs, and insurance premiums are often overlooked, and can have a big impact on the bottom-line. Even a minor accident, with no injuries, and a truck that is fit to continue driving can be expensive. Therefore, it always makes business sense to minimise the risk of an accident.

In today´s highly competitive world, truck operators also have a reputation to protect. A company´s safety record is seen as an increasingly important aspect of social responsibility. To help minimise the risk of an accident - and the cost and trauma that comes with it, Volvo offers innovative active safety features and solutions, including advanced driver support systems.

Driver training
Driving at the right speed means safer driving - and saves both time and money. The driver training focuses on various safety issues including the benefits of maintaining a suitable speed, the importance of using a seat belt and other basic safety issues, such as the dangers of fatigue and alcohol - involved in as many as one-third of all fatal traffic accidents.

Reducing Risk
¨No accident is ever acceptable; after all, lives are at stake. An accident is also traumatic - some drivers never get over it. And then there´s the often-overlooked impact, even a minor accident can have in terms of costs and reputation. Fortunately, there is a lot that operators can do today to reduce the risk of accidents and protect those involved in the event of one. At Volvo, we are particularly interested in the interplay between the driver, truck and the surrounding traffic.¨ - Rama Rao AS, Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing & Aftermarket, Volvo Trucks, VECV.
