CEC, in a JV with Soma Enterprises Ltd joins the bandwagon of metro tunneling in none other than Bengaluru city.

Chief Minister of Karnataka, B S Yeddyurappa officiated the Tunnel Commencement Ceremony at Bengaluru's underground tunneling construction site at Majestic station on May 20, 2011.

Present at the ceremony were 80 dignitaries including Managing Director, Bangalore Metro, N Sivasailam and representatives from Japan International Cooperation Agency and Taiwan Economic and Cultural Centre to India. This event marked a significant milestone in the progress of the Bangalore Metro Project.

The location

The Majestic Station, located in the most crowded section of Bengaluru city, is the first underground section that will undergo construction work for Bangalore Metro. The twin 4.8 km long east-west line from City Railway Station to Cricket Stadium in Bengaluru will be constructed at depths of up to 20 m below the city.

And the contractor undertaking the east-west corridor design, constructing tunnels and underground stations of the Bangalore Metro Project-Phase 1 is a JV of Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC)'s CEC International Corp India Private Ltd and Soma Enterprise Ltd.

CEC's role

CEC is the leading contractor for the construction of transport infrastructure in Taiwan. It has participated in transport infrastructure work in India since 2005 and has completed many prestigious projects like the 60 km stretch of four laning of NH-76 and DMRC's contract BC-16, recently. "We are one of the key contractors in Delhi Metro's tunneling and are now proud to have such an important association with Bangalore Metro," said Nita Ing, Chairman of Continental Engineering Corporation.

About CICI

CEC International Corporation India Pvt Ltd (CICI) is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Continental Engineering Corporation (CEC), Taiwan. This civil engineering construction company operates in the fields of MRTS, highways, bridges, high speed railway, townships, SEZs, real estate and environment sectors. Within a short span, CICI has been entrusted with the construction of high value projects across these segments.

The equipment

Two new 6.44 diameter Hitachi Zosen Slurry TBMs will be used in this tunneling project. The first TBM was launched at the ceremony on May 20, and the second will be ready to begin work next month. The tunneling ground on site is predicted to be mix-face, which indicates that both soil and bed rock exist at the tunnel section for a long distance. This is a severe condition, which can be overcome by the Slurry TBM with a 1,200 kW cutter drive power machine.

"This is the first time that Hitachi Zosen's TBM is deployed in India. We appreciate the cooperation with CEC in this venture and plan to expand our investment in India to meet the demand of its booming infrastructure market," exclaimed Hitachi Zosen, General Manager of Sakai Factory, Kazuhiro Fukumoto.

To celebrate the successful launch of Bengaluru's first TBM for the metro construction, Bangalore Metro Authority, CEC International Corporation India Pvt Ltd and Soma Enterprises together organised a technical symposium on May 21, titled 'Bangalore Metro
Tunnelling, TBM Technology and Underground Station Symposium.' The highlight of the event was the opening addresses by N Sivasailam, and the legendary 'Metro Man', Dr E Sreedharan, Managing Director, Delhi Metro.

The symposium

This is the first time that South India has held a technical forum with a gathering of 130 delegates across four continents - India, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, UK, and Canada - representing the expertise in metro planning, tunnelling and modern TBM technology. The symposium was concluded with a site tour of the Majestic, where the first TBM in Bengaluru was deployed by CEC and its subsidiary CEC International Corporation India Pvt Ltd.
