A network of expressways to line India's major arteries is required

Raghav Chandra, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Special Guest at the awards, envisions a glorious future for India’s construction and infrastructure sector.

As an official in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, where we interact intensely with construction companies, it gladdens my heart to see that the private sector and the media are working hard to be recognised and create forums where initiatives and excellence are identified and rewarded. The infrastructure sector is fundamental to our development and it surprises me that not enough focus has been given to it in the past. But today, at least the government recognises this, and every sector of infrastructure is being touched upon with an effort to give it a boost.

People ask me how many years’ window we have for the roads sector. We have hardly begun. The NHDP is just one large project of which about 50-60 per cent has been awarded. Apart from that, we need to create a network of expressways to line the major arteries of our country, which will provide the veins for high-speed, access-controlled traffic throughput between various clusters and industrial and tourist centres to enable economic development. We are all working very hard to put that together and it is actually happening in a slow, steady, incremental way.

Maybe over a period of five years, we will get our highways perfectly in order; and in around 10 years, we should get our expressways in order. That will be a momentous achievement for our country and the multiplier effect on our economy and social sector will be enormous...levelling between various social categories, economic development and tourism. I hope the highest levels of quality, excellence and standards will be maintained and the industry will be able to look upon the construction sector as not just an essential part of the entire economic chain, but an area that will provide the best dividends and results.
