ElectroMech's crane solutions are a proven way to handle challenges in Metro-Rail projects.

Metro Rail projects in India have seen phenomenal growth over the past few years. The success of the Delhi Metro as a rapid transit urban transportation solution was replicated in many urban cities like Chennai, Kochi, Bengaluru, etc. Nearly two dozen more Metro Rail projects are in the pipeline. Cities like Pune, Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Vijayawada, Patna, Indore, Bhopal, Guwahati, Kanpur, Varanasi, etc, are included under this expansion plan. Some of these projects are being undertaken through the public-private partnership (PPP) model, where state governments are actively inviting proposals and are equally supported by the Centre, based on project feasibility. With a lot of focus and push coming directly from the Centre and a greater demand for quality and sophisticated rapid transport solutions like Metro Rail, we can clearly see tremendous growth prospects for Metro Rail construction in times to come. In this direction, ElectroMech is completely geared up to handle all types of material handling challenges to support this growth.

ElectroMech has been associated with major Metro Rail projects like the Delhi Metro, Kochi Metro, Chennai Metro and now Pune Metro and Bangalore Metro projects, besides many upcoming projects where the company believes it will be the preferred partner to some of the top EPC companies executing these projects. Infrastructure has been and will continue to be a focus sector for ElectroMech with a decent share of business year-on-year. The company believes that the surge in Metro Rail projects in the years to come will result in remarkable growth in its overall business.

ElectroMech has proved to be a reliable partner to several EPC companies for Metro projects. It has supplied a 60-tonne launching girder hoist to Gammon India for the Delhi Metro Rail project. Further, it has been a part of the Bangalore Metro Rail project by supplying two 120-tonne gantry cranes to Navayuga. It has also supplied gantry cranes to the Chennai Metro project handled by Gammon India and Soma Constructions, which were used in their casting yards for safe handling of precast segments. These gantry cranes practically covered the entire length and breadth of the yards, reaching every corner. A major requirement at the Chennai Metro Rail project was to construct a parapet wall using precast cemented blocks. ElectroMech was quick to respond to this unusual requirement with a solution of a 7-MT gantry crane running on top of the flyover, with overhangs on both sides. With this arrangement, it was very easy to lift precast segments and position them precisely to form the parapet wall.

Another major contribution of ElectroMech is for the Kochi Metro project. Soma was looking for different types of cranes to cover its 300-m-long manufacturing bays and handle the various precast segments. In order to cut down the project cost, Soma wanted to explore the possibility of modifying and reusing existing cranes from other completed project sites.

The modification was carried out by ElectroMech's subsidiary company, Cranedge. Two cranes which were originally 50 MT with 20 m span were modified to 50 MT with 28 m span. Two more cranes of 120 MT with 22 m span were modified from Soma's earlier Chennai Metro Project to 80 MT with 32 m span to handle a load of 160 MT. ElectroMech has been offering customised solutions in Metro Rail projects in various application areas, and will continue with this approach to build its business in this growing sector.
