About 70 per cent progress achieved in Polavaram Irrigation Project

As reported by the Andhra Pradesh Government, the Polavaram Irrigation Project (PIP) is planned for completion by December 2021, and has achieved an overall progress of 69.54 per cent up to February 27, 2020, according to a release by PIB. An Expert Committee constituted by the Andhra Pradesh Government in June 2019 had suggested going in for fresh tenders for the balance works of the project. Thereafter, tenders were called by the state for the balance works of the main dam package and left side connectivity of headworks in August 2019. As reported by the state government, an agreement has been concluded for construction of balance headworks of PIP (including works incorporated in the agreement regarding sand policy) with Megha Engineering and Infrastructure in November 2019 for about Rs.15.48 billion by December 2021. According to information provided by Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti & Social Justice and Empowerment Rattan Lal Kataria, a PIB release mentioned that an agreement has also been concluded for the completion of the balance work of the left side connectivity of head works with MAX Infra (I) in November 2019 for Rs.2.31 billion by the end of May 2021. Further, the state government has also accorded permission to pre-close the contract of packages No. 5 and 6 of the Polavaram Left Main Canal for inviting tenders under the reverse tendering process.
