Foundation for Amravati's "construction city" to be laid by January 2019

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has announced that a 'construction city' will be established in Donakonda in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh. Donakonda will serve as a source of several manufacturing units, from where all equipment and components related to infrastructure development can be procured. The announcement was followed by the chief minister's scheduled visit to Singapore where he will receive technical and other support for the establishment of the city.

The proposed 'construction city' will have four trade centres in Amravati, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and Krishnapatnam. 'In Amaravati, we are developing a centre for building materials and construction machinery, which will be built in two phases of 250 acre each. We will lay the foundation for the first phase between October to January, the land for which has been identified in the Nidamarru village of Amravati,' says Ramnath V, Executive Vice Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Township and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APTIDCO). In Donakonda, the Andhra Pradesh Government has allocated 25,000 acre to set up the entire manufacturing hub for this industry. 'As and when companies develop economy of scale, they will backward integrate into manufacturing,' adds Ramnath. When asked about the government's requirements to see the project through, he answers that institutes for excellence in construction technology are being set up, which will have services not just in construction but in architecture and structural engineering as well.

This idea has been taken from China but the difference is that China is more product-centric, whereas the Donakonda project will be more industry-relevant. Further, there will be sale and leasing of construction machineries and services and skill development centres for training and upgradation.
