Work commences on India's first high-speed rail line

The country recently launched the civil works of its first high-speed line: the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, more popularly known as the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train. <p></p> <p>A foundation stone was recently laid in Ahmedabad for the 508-km line to Mumbai. The visionary project is expected to herald a new era of safety, speed and service for the people and help the Indian Railways become an international leader in scale, speed and skill. </p> <p>As <span style="font-weight: bold;">Harsh Dhingra, Chief Country Representative, India, Bombardier Transportation, </span>says, 'The launch of the high-speed network in India is a path-breaking initiative and will bolster the economy, create new jobs, improve connectivity, and enhance infrastructure and manufacturing in India.' </p> <p>The high-speed rail will pass through the 12 stations of Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati; while Mumbai will be an underground station, all the others will be elevated. 'The government is planning nine routes for the high-speed trains, and Bombardier Zefiro high-speed (HS) and very-high-speed (VHS) trains are already setting the benchmark in very high performance, very high efficiency and very high dedication globally,' adds Dhingra. </p> <p>'Make in India' is one of the prime objectives of the project, which is estimated to cost Rs 108,000 crore. 'Bombardier would be keen to support the Indian Government in its endeavour to create a high-speed network with our world-class Zefiro HS trains delivering the Make in India promise,' affirms Dhingra. 'Bombardier's expertise in the high-speed segment is unmatched. Over the past 20 years, we have helped deliver 850 trains and vehicles for high-speed and very-high-speed applications. We have also participated in 95 per cent of Europe's VHS trains.' </p> <p></p>
