For us it's more about exposing our products to the overall market

Andrew Satterley, Vice President - Asia Pacific, JLG Industries (Australia)

Marking its entry into India in 1997, JLG Industries, Inc is the world's leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of access equipment. The company top brass reveal their activities in India and their take on the Indian equipment market, in a conversation with Shriyal Sethumadhavan...

Can you tell us about JLG's activities in India?
For JLG, 2011 has been an exceptionally exciting year as the company moves towards setting up its service centre in Mumbai. Through this facility, we will execute JLG's sales and services operations. This will also support our customer base and take the company to the next level in India. Besides, the success of this centre will mark our entry in the different regions of India in the years to come.

Could you expound on what this facility would offer?
This facility will hold stock of new and used equipment. Regular workshops on how to use the equipment will be conducted. There will be service technicians at the centre who will demonstrate how to fix these machines. We will sell parts, conduct training and also have a sales administration as well. Safety and improved productivity will be one of the important aspects we will promote through the facility.

What are you aiming at in terms of safety?
Traditionally, people sit on scaffolds, or hang from a rope; whatever the method, there is high risk of mishaps. Our machines come with a harness which protects from potential falling. So, our equipment ensures safe working at heights.

How do you view the Indian equipment market?
As compared to India, the American equipment market is a lot more mature as it has been growing for a longer time. But one can't deny that India is at a point of exploration. This is the time for us to build a strong foothold here. The key is in the methodology of how buildings are constructed. But we could just redefine the method by making it safer and efficient. So we aim at working with local Indian companies, give them an opportunity to use and access equipment in the most appropriate way and build their facilities with ease and safety.

How affordable is your equipment?
With JLG establishing its manufacturing facility in China, we would be able to bring in an additional price benefit to the Indian as well as global market. This would definitely help companies easily adopt new equipment as it would be cost effective.

Any launches planned in the near future?
Our business is new by nature and for us, it's more about exposing our products to the overall market. Later in the year, we plan to reintroduce a 34-foot boom which was initially launched years ago and then put on a halt. We have already pre-sold the overall manufacturing finish of this product in India and it will be available in May.

Sunil Jain, General Manager, JLG Industries, Inc

“Today in India, JLG is among the leaders in aerial work platforms and power access equipment; the reason being our continuous support to the Indian customers. Extending this support, we plan to set up a full-fledged service centre in Mumbai.

For JLG, this facility is the first of its kind in India. The servicing centre would be the domicile for spare parts and machines. Also, if any customer requires complete overhauling of the machine, they can approach this facility. The Indian industry is becoming very safety conscious and JLG machines cater to that need.”
