bauma China 2012

Organised by Messe Mnenchen, the trade fair witnessed an overwhelming response from exhibitors and visitors alike, making it the biggest bauma China exhibition to date.

Date: November 27-30, 2012
Venue: Shanghai International Expo Centre
Organiser: Messe Mnenchen

Despite the economic gloom and slowing Chinese construction market, bauma China put up an incredible show at the Shanghai International Expo Centre from November 27-30, 2012.

The international trade fair displayed the latest construction vehicles and equipment, construction machinery and building material machines.

Breaking records

The fair broke records on all fronts. For the first time ever, bauma China occupied all the exhibition space - a total of 300,000 sq m - at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. This is 30 per cent more than the last bauma China in 2010. Also, the fair witnessed a record-breaking number of exhibitors. All in all, 2,718 exhibitors from 38 countries took part compared to 1,858 exhibitors from 37 countries in 2010; an increase of 46 per cent.

The fair attracted visitors from within the country and abroad. After China, the top 10 visitor countries comprised Russia, Korea, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Turkey. Around 180,000 visitors came to this year's bauma China compared to 155,615 visitors in 2010; an increase of 16 per cent. "bauma China braved all market tendencies," says Eugen Egetenmeir, Managing Director, Messe Mnnchen. "In this respect, it was held just at the right time. The show once again proved to be the key business platform for companies to tap into the Chinese market, as well as Greater Asia."

The show benefited not just exhibitors but also distributors from overseas. Indian manufacturers too gained from the event. "The show gave us an opportunity in terms of tie-ups in new products that will help us distribute these products in India and thereby increase our revenue," says Aniruddha Moharir, Head-Cranes, Voltas Ltd (M&CE Division). "We hope to have a good partnership with some new allies that will help us establish some new products in India."

New launches

Although leading Chinese construction manufacturers such as Zoomlion, Sany, Guangxi Liugong and Shantui were major players at the expo, American and European companies such as Caterpillar and Volvo had a significant presence as well. Caterpillar rented more than 12,000 sq m, the largest display at the trade show; amongst its exhibits was a unique Cat excavator built for the latest James Bond film, Skyfall. Amongst other leading participants were Sany Heavy Industries, Besser, Putzmeister Machinery, Hyundai Construction Machinery, Bosch Rexroth, Terex Corporation and Miller International.

The event saw the launch of many types of construction equipment and machinery. Chinese equipment manufacturer Shantui, famed for its bulldozers, pulled the covers off a 105 tonne bulldozer, powered by a 708 KW Cummins engine. Sany launched the 3,600 tonne Sany SCC86000A lattice boom crawler crane, the Sany-Palfinger crane range, including a 12 tonne truck-mounted stiff boom crane, SPS 30000 and loader cranes. Zoomlion launched its 2,000 tonne ZACB01 all terrain and its global 100 tonne RT110 rough terrain. FuWa launched its redesigned FWX series of crawler cranes, with capacities ranging from 320 tonne to 1,250 tonne. Huba Construction Machinery launched a new 6 tonne flat top tower, Model 6012 and Dana Holding Corporation unveiled a comprehensive line-up of drivetrain solutions.

Italian-Japanese compact equipment JV company IHIMER showcased its products at bauma China for the first time, just months after it started selling its mini excavators in the country. The company also manufactures compact tracked loaders and mini dumpers. IHISCE, a JV between IHI and Chinese SCE Electrical Holdings, took this opportunity to showcase the recently developed AS30 and AS34 compact-tracked loaders, the AS12 skid steer and the CARRY 105 EP, a 400 kg capacity tracked dumper powered by battery that will arrive in the market in the next few months.

Chinese manufacturer Juchao also made its debut at bauma China. It showcased a range of seven excavators - from a 1.7 tonne mini to a 26 tonne model - and a backhoe loader. The mini excavator was the JC18-9, which has a 0.05 cu m bucket capacity and a digging force of 14 kN.

The event was not just a launching pad for new equipment but for the latest technology. Several construction equipment manufacturers, including Chenggong, Liugong, Lovol, SDLG and XGMA, have used bauma China to showcase new construction equipment powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The LNG solution enables lower emissions and greater fuel efficiency compared to diesel-run equipment.

Having launched an LNG-powered wheeled loader at bauma China 2010, XGMA used this year's show to take the wraps off the latest 21.5 tonne tracked excavator, the XG822CNG. Lovol and Liugong's new LNG machines are both wheeled loaders in the 191 KW class: the FL966F-EXT (LNG) and CLG-862 LNG respectively. "It makes a lot of sense," says Ed Wagner, Director for Testing and Advanced Technology, Liugong. "There are a lot of markets in the world where gas is significantly cheaper (than diesel). It is also a lower emission fuel because it is a simple molecule and has been used in forklifts for years."

Overcoming slowdown

While the Chinese construction market has slowed, it is still one of the world's fastest-growing markets. Still, the construction machinery industry has been beset by oversupply, high inventories and unpaid bills. According to the China Construction Machinery Association, profit at major construction machinery makers in China fell 28.4 per cent in January-September, while sales inched up 0.02 per cent.

China began approving new major infrastructure projects in the third quarter in an attempt to revive growth after seven consecutive quarters of slowdown. Volvo Construction Company has invested over 1 billion Swedish krona (US$ 149.1 million) in expanding capacity and product offerings in China. "Volvo is set to build on its leading market position in China's excavator and wheel-loader segments by raising the bar even higher," says Pat Olney, President, Volvo Construction Equipment..

Overall, the event was a success. Dealers from India, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines, and distributors from Russia, Panama, Turkey and Egypt formed the major strength of visitors. Exhibitors like Comansa Jie benefited from such an enthusiastic response. They received a large number of orders amounting to a total amount of $8 million. That's good business!.
