bauma Munich 2013

The bauma Munich 2013 broke some past records and created an exemplary platform for exhibitors from the construction and equipment industry to display their offerings.

Date: April 15-21, 2013 Venue: Munich, Germany
Organiser: Messe Mnnchen

The bauma Munich 2013 was a success, in more ways than one. Not only did this edition of the exhibition break all previous records for exhibitor numbers and exhibition space, it also attracted the highest number of visitors ever. Additionally, it also witnessed the highest influx of international visitors than ever before; 3,420 exhibitors from 57 countries participated in the event and over 530,000 visitors from over 200 countries attended the event.

This eventful expo was held at the Messe Mnnchen exhibition centre between April 15-21, 2013. "This is very good for our industry in these turbulent times and it will certainly give it a boost," said Johann Sailer, Chairman-Construction Equipment and Building Material Machinery Association, VDMA and President, Committee for the European Construction Equipment Industry (CECE).

The 'Top Ten' countries of origin among the visitors were: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, the Russian Federation, France, Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden and Poland. Indonesia, bauma's partner country this year, was also strongly represented, with a high-ranking political delegation and around 800 visitors.

Of the 3,420 exhibitors, 1,346 were from Germany and 2,074 were from 57 other countries. Terex, Haulotte, CNH, Zoomilon, Hitachi, Volvo, Kobelco and many more well-known names from the construction and mining machinery industry came together to showcase their latest machines and innovations at bauma's record-breaking exhibition space of 570,000 sq m.

The head organisations of the German construction industry, the German Engineering Federation (VDMA) and the trade fair organiser Messe Munich have used this occasion to present the 'bauma Innovation' awards to some deserving companies. The jury had chosen six prize winners in five categories for the awards.

Out of a total of 156 entries from Germany and abroad, 15 groundbreaking new developments and solutions made it through to the final round.

The winning innovations in the five categories were: Herrenknecht, manufacturers of a wide range of mechanical tunnelling machines, were awarded under the 'Machinery' category. For the last five years, they have been working on the development of a new method of installing pipelines.

The end result was 'Pipe Express' - a fast, environmentally friendly and economical way of installing pipes.

For its AutoPilot Field Rover, Wirtgen won an award under the 'Machinery Components' category. Two winners were announced under the 'Construction Process and Construction Work' category as the jury considered both entries of equal merit. Bauer Group received an award for its project, a 'monopile foundation for a tidal engine turbine'. A number of companies in the Bauer Group were involved in developing this brand new concept for underwater drilling.

Max Bögl Bauunternehmung, too, won in this category, for its project for hybrid-energy wind towers constructed with revolving tower cranes.

The Mining Institute at the Technical University of Clausthal (Germany) was honoured and acknowledged under the 'Research' category. The institute has succeeded in developing a robust and practical system for determining the distribution of particles in granular materials, for example sand and gravel. This obviates the need for time-consuming and costly sampling from the process cycle and laboratory analysis.

Kaiser AG's new Walking Mobile Excavator 2013, developed in co-operation with the firm 'Design Department' of Linz, enthralled the judges and managed to grab the award for 'Best Design.'
