C'garh UT admin seeks 3-tier road link to Mohali airport

A three-tier road connectivity to Chandigarh from the upcoming international airport in Mohali has been demanded by UT administration and the matter has been taken up with the high powered inter-state coordination committee constituted by the Government of India. The administration has rued that none of the access options for Chandigarh being considered for the expanded airport compares with the access currently enjoyed by Chandigarh's residents.

At present, Chandigarh Airport has direct access from National Highway-21 which passes through the city. Land identified for expansion of the airport as an international airport falls within the State of Punjab.

Chandigarh has demanded that apart from an underpass across the runway, there should be road connectivity with the airport to Purv Marg near Sector 48 and from Zirakpur.

These should also be implemented to enable easy accessibility from all directions, since the airport will also serve the larger northern region including the State of Himachal Pradesh. The expansion plan envisages retention of the existing runway (in Chandigarh) and development of a new terminal in the additional land provided in Mohali by Government of Punjab (approx 300 acres area).
