Cargo village planned for Delhi airport
To promote the Delhi airport as the cargo gateway of India, the Delhi International Airport (DIAL) has planned a cargo village near it. DIAL, the operator of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, has issued notices inviting applications for the development of the village. World-class airports operate on cargo village concept.
DIAL's aim is in accordance of its larger plan to develop Terminal 3 as an aviation hub. It has identified areas for cargo infrastructure for both first and second tier layer of overall air cargo supply chain, a DIAL spokesperson said.
Cargo terminal operator and airlines form the first tier of stakeholders while freight forwarders form the second tier in the overall air cargo supply chain. DIAL plans to have the cargo village in line with international practices, which will facilitate air cargo trade and offer freight forwarders with on-airport warehousing and office facility.
The area of cargo village site will be 1,59,000 square metres. The location of the cargo village, in close proximity of the cargo terminals, will also enable freight forwarders to secure efficient transfers and make better product offers to the end customer.
