Finally, Sardar Sarovar dam inaugurated despite protests
Acccording to protestors and activits, about 40,000 families will be displaced due to the dam and are yet to be adequately compensated for the same. The government, however, reportedly claims that the number of families affected by the dam is not 40,000 but 18,000 and will also be given relocation aid. As per reports, according to activist Medha Patkar, the monsoons in the past couple of weeks have cut off bridges and will soon affect the nearby villages. According to her, the rehabilitation provided is in the form of temporary tin sheds. Among those severely affected include the tribal communities.
Now that the dam has been inaugurated, reports indicate that the focus of activism will move to demand for sufficient compensation, especially the lower-lying villages, which are most at risk of being submerged. The prime minister at the ceremony reportedly said that the project has been completed despite an ongoing ‘misinformation campaign’. The project will provide water to Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
