Govt sets up zero waste sites

Karnataka government set up five permanent Zero Waste Management site in Mysore and prepare four additional temporary locations to take in at least 5 tons of waste each.

This information was given by the Minister in charge of the Mysore district, SA Ramdas. Zero waste management sites have been set up in Kesare, JP Nagar, Bannimantap, Kumbarhalli and other places in order to take in at least 60 tons of solid waste material, reports suggest.

The buildup of garbage at the Vidyaranyapuram Sewage Farm prompted the state government to set up the sites. The build up posed a health hazard to area residents in near Sewage Farm, which posed a health hazard to area residents in near Sewage Farm.

The farm poses a health hazard to area residents in nearby JP Nagar, Vishveshwara Nagar and Vidyaranyapuram, where residents filed complaints about the stench emanating from the garbage pile.

It is learnt that solid waste dumping at the Sewage Farm is limited to about five acre so as to prevent open exposure of waste. The remaining 2.5 acre would be capped soon as well. Chemical spraying to reduce the smell is also been requested.

Ramdas plans to visit the plant again on November 19 to review the situation and determine whether the plant was operating under the stipulated guidelines.
