Hyderabad Metro project gets new steel cutting unit

Andhra Pradesh Urban Development Minister Maheedhar Reddy recently unveiled an automated steel cutting and bending plant that would be beneficial for the ongoing Hyderabad metro rail project.

The fully computerised automatic plant at the Uppal Metro Rail casting yard is spread on a 3.6 acre site, which includes a nearly half acre of covered area.

The plant has the capability to handle 3,500 tonne of steel rods a month or about 120 tonne a day. The city has only two such plants. The other one is located at Patancheru. Both plants will help in the execution of the mega Metro Rail project.

L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad), which implements the metro rail project, has set up the plant. MP Naidu, Project Director of Metro Rail, said the project needs continuous support from the government to complete it on schedule.

L&T is the concessionaire for the Rs 14,132-crore project, which has a viability gap component of Rs 1,458-crore. In addition, the state government will spend Rs 1,980 crore for various related aspects of the project to be completed within five years.

The 72-km stretch of elevated Metro project across three corridors in the twin cities requires over 2 lakh tonnes of steel reinforcement for various structures including pillars, viaduct, depots and station buildings.
