Kolkata Metro’s 350 m gap to be connected

The long pending construction of 14 piers which has caused the suspension of Kolkata Metro’s North-South corridor is set to commence soon. Recently, 50 encroachments were demolished to formally initiate the process. The 4 km stretch will cut travel time from Esplanade from around two hours to about 25 minutes.The project was approved back in the 2009 rail budget.

Work on the Noapara-Dakshineswar stretch is expected to begin soon as the deadline set by Metro Railway is reportedly for December 2018. At present, another 152 encroachments are to be demolished and relocated at the earliest, so that construction and development work can continue.

Similarly, the 50 recently demolished encroachments were also promptly relocated with coordination between Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority, Metro and the Municipality.  Delay in relocation has construction has raised the cost from the original estimated Rs 200 crore to Rs 319 crore now.
