Maha gives nod to develop Dharavi slum in Mumbai

For the ambitious Rs 5,600-crore Dharavi revamp project in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has given an in-principle approval. The State Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on August 7 approved the sanction plan after incorporating several of the nearly 755 suggestions and objections the government received since it was put on public notice.

Now, the approved plan will be sent to the State Slum Rehabilitation Authority and the State Urban Development Department for final approval. By October, bids may be invited for project's some sectors. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project Authority (DRPA) had prepared a sanction plan by detailing sectors, roads and other amenities planned and reserved.

In the project, all future developments will have to conform to the sanction plan. Some of the suggestions included in the review are land for a football ground, a state-of-the-art technology institute and a fashion school on the lines of National Institute of Fashion Technology. Suggestions given by public agencies like BMC and Mhada and by NGOs were given preferences.
