Mumbai h'way's 2-km stretch in Pune to be concretised

In Pune, a 2-km stretch of the Pune-Mumbai highway from Phugewadi to Dapodi will soon be concretised along all eight lanes. The stretch, which falls in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits, was widened earlier, but its concretisation work has not been completed. The PCMC has already concretised the 11-km highway stretch from Phugewadi to Nigdi.

The PCMC civic administration has sent a Rs 3.95-crore proposal to the general body for road improvement works on the 2-km stretch. Five years ago, the PCMC had widened the Phugewadi-Nigdi stretch to 61 m and concretised it. Service roads and footpaths had also been developed. Work on the 2-km Phugewadi-Dapodi stretch, however, could not be completed because the civic body could not acquire the land from defence authorities.

Shirish Poreddy from the PCMC's engineering department said that the civic body has received the possession of defence land from Phugewadi to CME gate and we can resume work.

This stretch will have central portion of four lanes for speedy movement of vehicles, which will have a tarred surface instead of concretised one. Road dividers will be built to separate these speed lanes from the service roads on both sides of the highway. There will also be wide footpaths along both sides, he added.

PCMC's engineering department will invite bids from contractors for the works after approval from the civic general body. The tendering process is expected to be completed in one-and-a-half months. The work has to be completed in six months, he said.
