NHAI awards first international project to Punj Lloyd-Varaha JV

NHAI has awarded an EPC project in Myanmar to the Punj Lloyd-Varaha (JV), which is also its first international project. This will involve upgrading the Yagyi-Kalewa division of Myanmar to a two-lane with ear-ten shoulder on the engineering.

The JV was selected as they bid at 0.0017 per cent lower than the cost estimated. The project is reportedly set to be 120 km long with an approximate cost of Rs 1,177.02 crore. The estimated time of completion for the project is three years.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had in their 2016 end of year review reportedly stated that, in order to improve road connectivity with south eastern region of Asia, India will be funding the development of a 120.74 km road between Kalewa and Yargi section in the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway. The highway will start at Moreh in Manipur and traveling through Tamu in Myanmar; will end at Mae Sot in Thailand. The construction of this project has been completed.

Furthermore, India will also be funding the development of 69 bridges on the 149.70 km section of Tamu-Kyigione-Kalewa road.
