Proposed foot overbridges to ease traffic in Kolkata

In order to enable smooth flow of traffic in the city, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) decided to build eight foot overbridges and would soon invite expression of interest from private players for the projects. The corporation planned all the foot overbridges at intersections where traffic jam has become a regular feature almost every day. The projects, which would be implemented under the private public partnership (PPP) model, will come up at Tollygunge Phari, Rajabazar, near Lord's Bakery crossing, opposite South city, Deshpriya park, near Ballugunge Siksha Sadan school, Park Circus connector and Moulali. The civic body will also build escalator at all the foot bridges. The civic body would collect revenue by allowing private partner to display advertisements on the foot bridges. Earlier, there was a proposal to set up a foot overbridge at Ballygunge phari. The escalators will enable elderly people to use these bridges comfortably. There will be traffic volunteers to request pedestrians to use the escalators. . Once the expression of interest is settled, private firms will start installing them. There is a proposal to set up more escalators in the city.
