Rs 5,000 cr needed to restore roads & bridges in U'khand

To restore the washed out roads and bridges in Uttarakhand, the Union government has been urged by its Road Ministry to provide Rs 5,000 crore. On June 17, flash floods had washed away many vital road links and thousands died in the natural calamity. The Ministry has estimated to restore the road network in the next three years.

Recent reports say that in the state, over 1,000-kilometre stretch of highways and nearly 190 bridges have been damaged in the flash floods with many vital road links getting completely washed away. The road ministry has prepared an action plan for reconstructing the damaged highways in the medium and long term which was presented to an inter-ministerial group set up for drawing up a time-bound plan for the state.

In its plan, the ministry has sought an investment to the tune of Rs. 1,000 crore for restoring the road network for medium term sustainability of the entire national highway network in the state. Besides it has also sought approximately Rs. 4,000 crore investment for permanent development of the entire stretch including reconstruction of bridges, tunnels formation of embankments, etc.
