Secunderabad becomes India’s first ‘green’ railway station

Secunderabad’s railway station was recently awarded a silver rating certification by the Indian Green Building Council-Confederation of Industry (IGBC-CII), making it the first Indian railway station to receive the tag of a ‘Green Railway Station’.

The Green Railway Stations Rating System was developed by the IGBC-CII with the help of the Indian Railways’ Environment directorate in order to make Indian railway platforms environment-friendly.

The six criteria considered to evaluate the ‘green’ level of the stations were: Energy efficiency, water efficiency, green initiatives, hygiene and sanitation, innovative ideas, and health. The Secunderabad Railway station met all these criteria and managed to stand out.

The station had a solar plant installed in 2016, which generates 2,500 units of power every day and solar photovoltaic cells cover about 41 per cent of the station’s exposed roof. The solar effort saves about Rs 70 lakh per year.

All of the station’s lighting needs have been met through LED lighting, taking the total count of energy-efficient fixtures to around 4,000. It also uses organic fertilisers to grow more than 400 species of plants across the station. The station also has a central waste collection system, rainwater harvesting systems, CO2 sensors, a sewage treatment plant, bio toilets and bottle crushing machines.
