Vellore corporation carries out drain work
Vellore Municipal Corporation is carrying out the drain restoration work in Thottapalayam at a cost of Rs 75 lakh under the Integrated Urban Development Mission 2012-2013. Of the total 450 metre, work has been completed for around 400 metre.
Work at Thottapalayam, under ward 26, is nearing completion. The local body intensified the restoration of drains and water channels in the city ahead of the monsoon season.
City Mayor Karthiyayini inspected work at the ward following repeated complaints of blocked drains on Anna Salai near Vellore South Police station.
Owing to the on-going restoration work, shopkeepers nearby complained that the drains on the other side of the road was blocked for the past four months. This resulted in stagnation of sewage waste.
The blockage of drains had affected the passersby and posed health hazards to those working in nearby shops as the drains from Kalaspalayam, Old Town and Filterbed areas flowed through this area.
The mayor ordered the officials to prepare an estimation for de-silting the drains. She also ordered the officials to take steps to de-silt the drains on the busy Anna Salai. Corporation Engineer E Devakumar, Sathuvachari Zonal president A P L Sundaram and councillor J Porselvi accompanied her on the inspection.
