A transport miracle
Touted as an engineering marvel, the Mumbai Monorail system is set to begin its passenger service later this month. The Rs 3,000 crore project is being spearheaded by Ratnakar Gaikwad, Commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). It is being executed by L&T with Scomi Engineering Bhd and involves design, construction, installation, testing and commissioning of a 19.4 km route stretching between Jacob Circle and Chembur. The Phase I of the project will be between Wadala and Chembur via Mahul (about 9 km), the Phase II will cover the distance between Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Wadala (11 kilometres).The monorail network is aimed at easing traffic in Mumbai, India’s most populous city, having a population of about 14 million people.
