S Bhattacharya is tipped to become the next Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India, succeeding S Narsing Rao. The Public Enterprises Selection Board has recommended Bhattacharya after interviewing 12 people, including three top company executives. The new chairman has a challenging task ahead as Power, Coal and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goyal is determined to get Coal India to double its output and produce 1 billion tonne of the fuel in 2019. Andhra Pradesh cadre IAS officer Bhattacharya, 57, is also the Chairman & Managing Director of Singareni Collieries Company, a JV between Telangana and the Central Government. For now, all eyes are on him to see how he gets his act together and sets a clear goal for coal.
