Metro Maker
Not far from now when Mumbai will celebrate its first underground metro. Metro 3 leaped a big step towards reality when the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) appointed five consortia for civil work of the project. SK Gupta, Director-Projects, MMRC, reportedly said that the consortia will prepare designs and start construction by October while the tunnelling work will start by early next year. MMRC has awarded contracts to build tunnels and 26 underground stations in seven packages to L&T-STEC, HCC-MMS, Dogus-Soma, CEC-ITDCEM-TPL and J Kumar-CRTG. Further, MMRC has started issuing tenders for other important works such as the procurement of rakes, signalling and electrification as well. While the project is reportedly expected to take four to five years to complete, with Gupta´s expertise, this does not seem far away. A former IRSE officer with 27 years of experience, out of which Gupta spent 17 years at senior positions in the prestigious Delhi Metro Rail Corp, New Delhi, he was among the first officers joining DMRC.
