The central government has unveiled a mega plan to boost solar power and has set aside a sum of Rs 1,000 crore for subsidising solar power. Under the national solar mission, it has proposed to declare Chandigarh, Amritsar and New Delhi as solar cities where people would be encouraged to harness solar energy by rooftop panels and contribute to the national power grid. The Centre has chalked out plans to reduce the cost of solar panels by indigenising them. This would be done by producing silicon chips used in panels, indigenously.
