An inter-ministerial committee has recommended state-owned CIL to set-up washeries along with reject-based power plants so that the rejects can be consumed in the same place, doing away with the need to transport them for long distances. At present, CIL generates about 1.3 mtpa of rejects through washery. It plans to establish 16 coal washeries with an aggregate capacity of 100.6 mtpa. Of these, six are coking coal with a capacity of 18.6 mtpa and 10 non-coking coal washeries with a capacity of 82 mtpa.
