The Indian Government has announced plans to build four mega solar farms with a total capacity of more than 2 GW by next year. The new plants will double the country's solar energy capacity, putting it in line to reach its 2017 target of 10 GW. The photovoltaic projects, which are set to begin construction in April, will nearly double India's current PV capacity. The plants will be part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission launched in 2010, the first phase of which added 1,684 MW of grid-connected solar power. The mission aims to add 20 GW grid-connected solar power to the country's energy mix by 2022.
