The first unit of the Kudankulam nuclear plant was dedicated to the nation jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently, with both calling it a fine example of special and privileged Indo-Russian strategic partnership. While stressing that the 1,000 MW unit was an important addition to India´s continuing efforts to scale up production of clean energy, Modi reportedly said that five more units of similar capacity each were planned at Kudankulam. At 1,000 MW, Kundankulam 1 is the largest single unit of electrical power in India. At Kudankulam alone, five more units of 1000 MW each are planned.
