Locals at Jaitapur in Maharashtra urged the National Green Tribunal to cancel the environmental clearance for the 10,000 MW nuclear power project proposed in the area alleging inconsistencies in the approval process. The locals allege that the clearance to the project was based on insufficient and misleading environmental and social impact assessment, inadequate public consultation and the wrong appraisal of facts. The Tribunal issued notices to the Nuclear Power Corporation of India and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board regarding the project and has posted the matter for hearing on November 28, 2011.
