New power policy allocates 50 per cent to home state

The government has approved a new policy for allocation of power to be generated by upcoming state-run thermal power plants. It has earmarked 50 per cent to the home states and has fixed an overall target generation capacity of 100,000 MW for the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-17). In the current 11th Five Year Plan, the government had targeted 78,000 MW which was slashed down to about 62,000 MW.

The proposal pertains to 14 power projects to come up during the 12th and 13th Plan and all thermal plants of central public sector undertakings.
