The coal ministry has decided to de-allocate a total of 14 coal blocks from companies such as National Thermal Power Corporation and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). This is being done due to the delay in developing the captive coal blocks allocated to these firms. After reviewing the progress of various captive blocks, the coal ministry had recently issued show cause notices to various power, steel and cement companies that were allocated 84 coal blocks and four lignite blocks. Based on their responses, the review committee under the chairmanship of special secretary (Coal) recommended de-allocation of 14 blocks allocated to public sector firms and two blocks awarded to private firms.
