Steel Authority of India (SAIL) has stated that the import of steel will become costlier by at least Rs 1,000-1,500 per tonne due to a hike in the customs duty on flat products. The duty hike, although not to the extent of the demand of the domestic steel makers, who wanted it to be 10 per cent, is aimed at discouraging imports of steel from countries like China, Russia, Korea and Brazil, ensuring more business for the domestic steel industry.
