BMC to allocate additional Rs1,000 cr for road repairs in Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was in the process of issuing a tender of Rs 1,000 crore for road repair work in Mumbai. Of the total Rs 1,000 crore, Rs 300 crore has been allotted for concretisation of roads and Rs 150 crore for asphalting of roads. The work is expected to begin in January 2011 and completed before the next monsoon. For 2010-11, the BMC had made a budgetary allocation of Rs 800 crore for the roads department. This tender is over and above the budgetary allocation.
Mumbai has approximately 2,000 km of roads, of which 500 km has been concretised since 1983. The BMC has also kept Rs 50 crore for urgent repairs and trying new technologies.
The BMC has also decided to use its inhouse technology ultra thin white topping that was worked on by Vishal Thombre, the engineer from BMC’s road department along with IIT Bombay is also environment-friendly.
