Budget lays emphasis on capacity enhancement

The Railway ministry announced in the 2012-13 budget that the signalling system and 19,000 km of tracks would be modernised in the coming year. The tracks account for almost 80 per cent of traffic, and trains will be able to run at more than 160 kmph on the upgraded tracks. They will also be able to tackle up to 25 tonne axle load. The ministry also announced the setting up of a Railway Safety Committee, which will be headed by former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, Anil Kakodkar.
