Centre sets up panel to decide port sector regulation

The Union Government has constituted an inter-ministerial committee comprising representatives from the Planning Commission, the Shipping Ministry and state governments to decide on port sector regulation. With non-major ports handling a major chunk of the total cargo, various stakeholders have been calling for a level playing field in regulation. In response, the ministry brought out a draft bill proposing a two-tier regulatory authority system for major and state supervised ports.
