Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) at Kenjar presently has a runway, which is 8,000 ft long. Airports Authority of India (AAI), which operates MIA, wants to extend this by 11,600 ft, an addition of 3,600 ft in two phases - first phase by extending it to 10,000 ft and the remaining 1,600 thereafter. AAI has set aside a budget of around Rs 6,000 crore to take up development works of airports owned by it across India for the current fiscal. The proposed expansion of the runway to 10,000 ft is expected to cost around Rs 350 crore and acquisition of around 185 acre of land needed for it will cost another Rs 100 crore.
